Getting back to normal

Dustin took Derek and Erika to the airport on Monday as they both had flights out around the same time.  That worked out great!  Meanwhile, it was nice to get back to normal.  Lexi had soccer and tumbling on Monday, and this gave Grammy a couple hours by herself :)
 Skipping.  So funny!
Playing "sharks and fishes" against the coaches

This is what she does while I'm working:  I have a stash of activities in the office, including all the library books.  This day she was reading to Taylor.

Devan came home with these sheets.  He was telling me that this was a night sky and he made a constellation out of his name.  There's also an erupting volcano in this picture.  I was impressed that they covered constellations!  And last week they had an in-school field trip.  They set up a planetarium in the gym and they learned about different constellations.  Devan was telling us about the Big Dipper, Small Dipper and Orion.  Those were the ones he could remember.  But he also knew that the North Star was at the end of the Big Dipper's handle.
Then they did the day time sky.  He told me this whole story about how there's fish in the ocean swimming with the people and the green and orange is a net to catch the fish.

This was his next challenge homework packet.  Now this was really advanced.  I was reading it to him and he says "What's a President?".  Oh man....  How to explain this to a 5 year old?  So we talked about what the President does, and then looked up pictures of President Obama.  In the picture he drew, he labeled himself and President Obama.  The first sentence is that the President likes to make rules.  And Devan's next question was: how old are you?  And the answer?  52 years.

For homework, he had to do a little book review.  He picked "Because A Little Bug Went Ka-Choo!"  We just LOVE this book- one of my favorites from childhood that my parents saved.  They think it's hilarious!
This part of the homework was the hardest for Devan.  He had to come up with a story about a magic wand.  He really struggles with the open-ended creative stuff.  He likes to know the rules and can easily follow them.  So far, he finds math a lot easier than the writing portion of his homework.  Needless to say, he whined all the way through this page.  Here's his story: I will play tricks on Lexi.  Then I will play tricks on 100 people.  After I played tricks I will turn him invisible so he will not see me.  It is time to play tricks on him.

For this sheet, he had to figure out if he needed to add or subtract to get to the answer.
These were story problems.  Oh how I loathed these in school.....  This was a big struggle to explain what to do.  But towards the end he was starting to pick it up and was able to identify the sentences he didn't need to know, in order to get the answer.
This number riddle sheet was also a struggle at first, but I was surprised he picked it up quickly after the first couple.  But, I did have to do a lot of paraphrasing and re-wording it in lots of different ways in order for him to understand what was being asked.
Lexi did some painting one day
Grandma sent the kids this ecosystem.  There are 4 shrimp inside and it's a totally enclosed ecosystem.  Pretty cool!  The kids love watching the shrimp and they even named them.  Lexi named two: Ella and Eya.  Devan named two: Mudo and Noodle.
Doing a little shopping, Lexi was attracted to this mannequin and suitcase.  A cute picture, and also glad she easily left that stuff behind and never spoke of it again.  Still able to avoid the princess stuff for now....  Gotta hold on to that as long as possible!  Luckily she has friends with lots of princess stuff so when we have our weekly play dates, she can get it out of her system and gladly comes home to play with cars :)
